Artist Bio:
Rosa Menkman is a Dutch artist curator and researcher "such as glitch, encoding and feedback artifacts" focusing on noise artifacts that result from accidents in both analogue and digital media . She believes that these artifacts can facilitate an important insight into the otherwise obscure alchemy of standardization via resolutions. This process of imposing efficiency order and functionality does not just involve the creation of protocols and solutions but also entails black-boxed obfuscated compromises and alternative possibilities that are in danger of staying forever unseen or even forgotten.

In Asian food culture, “Did you eat rice?” means “Have you had food?” (usually referring to a specific meal: breakfast, lunch or dinner). Additionally, it could also be used when greeting others that one may be concerned about; a substitute for “How have you been?”, “Are you OK?”, or “Is everything all right?”.
The experimental documentary film 'Did you eat rice?' features the sensitive relationships between some local farmers and nature, which can be seen in their ordinary lives and especially during the rice harvest in Omachi, Japan. This work asks the question “Did you eat rice?” to various subjects in the film, including the land, the farmers, primary school students who have experienced rice growing workshops, the insects who dwell within the rice paddy and even single grains of rice that are present in every meal.
Artist Bio:
Ellie Kyungran Heo makes experimental films by collaging performances with documentary footage of her subject, tracking how her relationship with the subject changes, with respect to conflict, intimacy and sensitivity. In doing so, she attempts to create a space in which questions relating to the ethical relationship between the subject, the audience and the artist herself, can be examined. Her recent works have been exhibited and screened at the Whitstable Biennale, Kent (2016); Whitechapel Gallery, London (2016); South London Gallery, London (2015); Isshi Art Space, Omachi, Nagano (2016); Total Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul (2017) and numerous international art film festivals including Experiments in Cinema, New Mexico (2014, 2017).
